World Cup Twitter

It’s been fascinating watching Twitter during the World Cup. Well, in between Fail Whales. Twitter deciding to make some major under-the-hood changes at a time when their traffic is screaming does display a bit of “AT&T-ism”, believing you can do more then you can. More of a “Scale Fail.” But when you live on the edge, sometimes things don’t go as planned. And Twitter has been giving you the play-by-play of the screwup. In fact, the reason I can talk with authority on the Twouble with Twitter is that Twitter has told me and everyone else what’s happening. In any case, this post is not about that, it’s about the users and the beautiful game. Read More...

Checking in. 4 Months on 4Square
Thu, June 03, 2010 Filed in: Social Media | Mobile
Today, a sort of dynamic convergence has brought me to this post. My realization that 4Square has no real value to me as a user, a Twitter buddy tweeted how the 4Square/Starbucks deal is a ripoff since it seems Starbucks didn’t inform the stores, how my New MediaTechnology students have never heard of 4Square (key demo!) and how a Mashable article calls “checking in” the new big thing for 2010. School's out

Teaching social media as a professional tool to grad students has been an interesting learning experience. Having a background in television production, web production and living in social media, I was considered a “rare hybrid” in a “unique position to teach.” Ok, well, lets see about that. Going in, my assumption was I wouldn’t be teaching too much. Don’t 20 year olds know all about this stuff? I fully expected to learn more then teach. All the “press” going in was “the kids know all this stuff.” All the jokes about how parents have their 12 year old fix the printer. The 10 year old is “helpdesk.” So, the first day, the first question I ask was “how many people have a Facebook account. A few hands go up. Yikes. “How many have a Twitter account?” Fewer hands. Well, it seems I will be teaching after all. Read More...

News you can use
My last post talked about Facebook’s Mobile app opening geo-aware features. What if news had that same concept? When it comes to breaking news, the importance to the consumer is “does it matter to me?” If the event was in your neighborhood, wouldn’t you want to know? And if you travel around during the day, wouldn’t you want to know no matter where you were? Well, your phone knows where you are (scary thought, but true). Now you just need to tie that to a news organization and a mobile app. Read More...
