Broadcast Employment

The broadcast and entertainment industry rely on advertising. Companies don't advertise unless they have the budget for it. Companies have the budget for it if they sense people are willing to buy. It's the simple cycle. But it puts the broadcast industry near the end of the food chain. Is Congress making it worse?
The Wall Street Journal has an article today describing a new jobs bill. A $15-billion dollar measure designed to give companies an incentive to hire. A major incentive being that companies hiring an unemployed worker are freed up from paying their Social Security tax for the year 2010. If the employee stays for more then a year, the company is give a $1000 tax credit. That all sounds just great for companies...who will now sit on all hiring until it’s a done deal.
With the Health Care fiasco, Congress is looking for some way to showing the American public they are competent, so chances are good some form of jobs measure will get passes. But, this being the 21st Century US Congress, it will come after the usual foot dragging and unnecessary amendments, the Republican’s saying the Democrats are excluding them, half the Democrats disagreeing with the other half of the Democrats. And time will pass. Meanwhile, companies will sit back and wait for the party to come to them.
In the long term, job hiring incentives are a great idea. But this will not be a quick fix. And an even longer delay for the broadcast and entertainment industry.
